Cosmetic Tooth Coloured Fillings
Many patients are now electing to replace mercury fillings for cosmetic/health reasons with tooth-coloured fillings. We no longer use mercury fillings at The Harman Dental Clinic in line with Scandinavia and Germany who have banned its use
Dr Oliver Harman has studied with Didier Dieditchi at the Geneva Smile Centre to give his patients beautiful, natural looking cosmetic fillings that will last for many years to come. Recent evidence shows that skilfully placed tooth-coloured fillings can actually last considerably longer than mercury fillings.
On average White Fillings should last for 10 years or more. At The Harman Dental Clinic we advise that white fillings are best when the cavity/filling to be replaced is small to medium in size. When a larger filling is required a porcelain inlay or porcelain onlay is a better option.
Porcelain Inlays / Porcelain Onlays
Porcelain Inlays and Porcelain Onlays are fillings made of porcelain similar to that used in high strength veneers. They fit into or onto the tooth. They are indicated when there is too little tooth structure to predictably support a tooth-coloured filling but there is enough tooth to avoid placing a crown, which is more destructive to the tooth. The advantage of porcelain inlay/porcelain onlays over fillings is that they are more durable lasting up to 15-25 years. They are constructed in a similar way to crowns and therefore take two visits to prepare and fit.
