Missing Teeth: Comparison of Treatment Alternatives

Leaving a gap

Advantages

  1. No Cost
  2. No Treatment

Disadvantages

  1. If gap shows unsightly
  2. If gap can other teeth to move out of line and disrupt you balanced bite and appear unsightly
  3. Some chewing or biting function may be lost
  4. Missing tooth may result in chewing overload of other teeth increasing gum disease and causing tooth fracture.

Removable Dentures

Advantages

  1. Complete in a few weeks
  2. Unlikely to need surgery
  3. Low cost

Disadvantages

  1. Maybe unstable
  2. Sometimes cannot be tolerated
  3. Accumulates plaque or food more readily

Fixed Bridges

Advantages

  1. Complete in a few visits
  2. Unlikely to need surgery
  3. Teeth are fixed and immovable

Disadvantages

  1. May require cutting healthy teeth
  2. If one bridge support is compromised, the entire bridge may have to be discarded and replaced
  3. May be difficult to remove plaque since floss cannot pass easily between teeth
  4. High Cost
  5. Does not prevent bone loss

Implant supported bridges and dentures

Advantages

  1. Teeth are fixed and do nor move
  2. No chance of further dental decay
  3. Does not require cutting into healthy teeth
  4. Well documented longevity
  5. Prevents bone loss

Disadvantages

  1. Prolonged treatment time
  2. Requires surgery
  3. High cost
  4. May be difficult to remove plaque since floss cannot always pass easily between teeth or implants
